Alternatives to PCBs and Flex Circuits Imagine that you have a great idea for a product that includes a plastic injection-molded case or a glass panel, and you would like to explore the possibility of replacing the mechanical buttons with capacitance sensors buried under the surface. The first step in making a capacitive sensing system is to arrange a set of conductors on a nonconductive surface, Reference 1 .

"User's Guide to Rapid Prototyping" What is rapid prototyping? How does it work?
3D printing process: A layer manufacturing technology in which the layers are formed by using a printhead-like device to distribute an adhesive to bond the surface of a powder in the desired shape. Computer Aided Design (CAD): The use of computer software to allow a user to design, modify, and simulate a three-dimensional part or assembly.
(Enter summary) Abstract: Although numerous context-aware applications, those that implicitly take their context of use into account, have been developed, and advances have been made in technology to acquire contextual information, it is still difficult to develop and prototype interesting context-aware applications. This is largely due to the lack of programming support available to both programmers and end users.

Rapid Prototyping is a technology that allows for the creation of 3 dimensional complex prototypes in very short times. This therefore allows the product design cycle to be greatly reduced, and allows for ideas and concepts to be tested, both from an aesthetic and from a mechanical point of view, at "relatively" low costs (see the note below about costs).
Advances in engineering science and technology : Demonstrate a systematic understanding of knowledge of specific aspects of emerging rapid prototyping technologies (e. g. powder technology, powder-laser interaction, et
Targeting potential customers according to company size is an important factor for RP suppliers; only 7% of sites with less than 50 employees said they might use RP in future, compared to 18% of sites with more than 50 employees. Market Growth The findings above on future intentions fit broadly with the predictions for growth of the RP market. "Right now the situation is moderate growth overall, with an 8-10 % average for products and services on an annual basis," explains Ed. "That can be expected to more or less continue, unless some kind of revolutionary technology opens up new applications in a dynamic way.

Editorial Reviews Book Description In an age where better, faster, and cheaper is the mantra for product development, rapid prototyping is recognized for its ability to help companies achieve these goals simultaneously. However, determining when to apply rapid prototyping requires an understanding of the technology, the process, and its strengths and weaknesses. User's Guide to Rapid Prototyping will help designers, engineers, executive management, and others in the company understand how to apply rapid prototyping technologies such as 3D printing, stereolithography, selective laser sintering, and fused deposition modeling to the product development process. Intertwined with rapid prototyping, the processes of rapid tooling and rapid manufacturing are also discussed. An aid to making informed business decisions, the book provides information about when it may be right to implement rapid prototyping in-house versus going to a service provider. The path through justification, evaluation, and implementation is outlined. Readers will gain insights into the benefits, risks, and limitations of each technology. About the Author Todd Grimm has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. He has been active in the field of rapid prototyping since 1990 and is considered to be one of the leading experts on the topic. His experience with the technology comes from hands-on-work with various rapid prototyping systems in a service bureau environment.

Someone on the RP-ML list just asked what the market value for a SLA-350 is. I'm not familiar with the differences between the SLA-350 and SLA-3500, but I know that there was an upgrade path at some point.

"User's Guide to Rapid Prototyping" is the first text of this technology and process that I have read. Since everything it presents as a process is new as compared to the established processes that I am more familiar with, every section provided new information and practical knowledge to my reading effort.
Padding, welding and freeform fabrication of nickel aluminide intermetallic compound by reactive rapid prototyping process Matsuura, K; Koyanagi, T; Kudoh, M; Oh, JH; Kirihara, S; Miyamoto, Y Materials Transactions (Japan), vol. 43, no. 5, pp. 1146-1152, May 2002 A novel method for padding, welding and freeform fabrication of intermetallic alloys based on an exothermic synthesis reaction between powder and droplets is proposed, and its feasibility is examined using nickel monoaluminide, NiAl, as a demonstration material. In an experiment for NiAl padding on steel, a small amount of nickel powder was fed onto a steel surface, followed by supplying an aluminum droplet onto the powder.
3 Rapid Prototyping Techniques Most commercially available Rapid Prototyping machines use one of six techniques. At present, trade restrictions severely limit the import/export of rapid prototyping machines, so this guide only covers systems available in the U.
To elicit customer/user input, frequent scheduled and ad hoc/impromptu meetings with the stakeholders are held. Demonstrations of system capabilities are held to solicit feedback before design/implementation decisions are solidified.
RP Terminology Unraveled. The terminology that is used to describe the many technologies and applications of additive fabrication is extremely confusing.

Prototyping The Prototyping Model was developed on the assumption that it is often difficult to know all of your requirements at the beginning of a project. Typically, users know many of the objectives that they wish to address with a system, but they do not know all the nuances of the data, nor do they know the details of the system features and capabilities.
